Lift up thine eyes sweet Psyche What is sheA
That those soft fringes timidly should fallB
Before her and thy spiritual browC
Be shadowed as her presence were a cloudD
A loftier gift is thine than she can giveE
That queen of beauty She may mould the browC
To perfectness and give unto the formF
A beautiful proportion she may stainG
The eye with a celestial blue the cheekH
With carmine of the sunset she may breatheI
Grace into every motion like the playJ
Of the least visible tissue of a cloudD
She may give all that is within her ownK
Bright cestus and one silent look of thineL
Like stronger magic will outcharm it allB
-
Ay for the soul is better than its frameM
The spirit than its temple What's the browC
Or the eye's lustre or the step of airN
Or color but the beautiful links that chainG
The mind from its rare element There liesO
A talisman in intellect which yieldsP
Celestial music when the master handQ
Touches it cunningly It sleeps beneathR
The outward semblance and to common sightS
Is an invisible and hidden thingT
But when the lip is faded and the cheekH
Robbed of its daintiness and when the formF
Witches the sense no more and human loveU
Falters in its idolatry this spellV
Will hold its strength unbroken and go onW
Stealing anew the affectionsX
Marvel notY
That Love leans sadly on his bended bowC
He hath found out the loveliness of mindZ
And he is spoilt for beauty So 'twill beA
Ever the glory of the human formF
Is but a perishing thing and Love will droopA2
When its brief grace hath faded but the mindZ
Perisheth not and when the outward charmB2
Hath had its brief existence it awakesX
And is the lovelier that it slept so longC2
Like wells that by the wasting of their flowD2
Have had their deeper fountains broken upE2
