A servant of the living God is deadA
His errand hath been well and early doneB
And early hath he gone to his rewardC
He shall come no more forth but to his sleepD
Hath silently lain down and so shall restE
-
Would ye bewail our brother He hath goneF
To Abraham's bosom He shall no more thirstG
Nor hunger but forever in the eyeH
Holy and meek of Jesus he may lookI
Unchided and untempted and unstainedJ
Would ye bewail our brother He hath goneF
To sit down with the prophets by the clearK
And crystal waters he hath gone to listL
Isaiah's harp and David's and to walkM
With Enoch and Elijah and the hostN
Of the just men made perfect He shall bowO
At Gabriel's Hallelujah and unfoldP
The scroll of the Apocalypse with JohnQ
And talk of Christ with Mary and go backR
To the last supper and the garden prayerS
With the belov'd disciple He shall hearT
The story of the Incarnation toldP
By Simeon and the Triune mysteryU
Burning upon the fervent lips of PaulV
He shall have wings of glory and shall soarW
To the remoter firmaments and readA
The order and the harmony of starsX
And in the might of knowledge he shall bowO
In the deep pauses of Archangel harpsY
And humble as the Seraphim shall cryH
Who by his searching finds thee out Oh GodZ
-
There shall he meet his children who have goneF
Before him and as other years roll onQ
And his loved flock go up to him his handA2
Again shall lead them gently to the LambB2
And bring them to the living waters thereS
-
Is it so good to die and shall we mournC2
That he is taken early to his restE
Tell me Oh mourner for the man of GodZ
Shall we bewail our brother that he diedD2
