'They are all up the innumerable starsA
And hold their place in heaven My eyes have beenB
Searching the pearly depths through which they springC
Like beautiful creations till I feelD
As if it were a new and perfect worldE
Waiting in silence for the word of GodF
To breathe it into motion There they standG
Shining in order like a living hymnH
Written in light awaking at the breathI
Of the celestial dawn and praising HimH
Who made them with the harmony of spheresJ
I would I had an angel's ear to listK
That melody I would that I might floatL
Up in that boundless element and feelD
Its ravishing vibrations like a pulseM
Beating in heaven My spirit is athirstL
For music rarer music I would batheN
My soul in a serener atmosphereO
Than this I long to mingle with the flockP
Led by the living waters and lie downQ
In the green pastures of the better landL
When wilt thou break dull fetter When shall IR
Gather my wings and like a rushing thoughtL
Stretch onward star by star up into heaven 'S
-
Thus mused Alethe She was one to whomT
Life had been like the witching of a dreamU
Of an untroubled sweetness She was bornV
Of a high race and laid upon the kneeW
With her soft eye perusing listlesslyW
The fretted roof or on Mosaic floorsX
Grasped at the tessellated squares inwroughtL
With metals curiously Her childhood pass'dL
Like faery amid fountains and green hauntsY
Trying her little feet upon a lawnZ
Of velvet evenness and hiding flowersA2
In her sweet bosom as it were a fairB2
And pearly altar to crush incense onC2
Her youth oh that was queenly She was likeD2
A dream of poetry that may not beW
Written or told exceeding beautifulE2
And so came worshippers and rank bow'd downQ
And breathed upon her heart as with a breathI
Of pride and bound her forehead gorgeouslyE2
With dazzling scorn and gave unto her stepF2
A majesty as if she trod the seaW
And the proud waves unbidden lifted herG2
And so she grew to woman her mere lookH2
Strong as a monarch's signet and her handL
The ambition of a kingdomI2
-
From all thisJ2
Turn'd her high heart away She had a mindL
Deep and immortal and it would not feedL
On pageantry She thirsted for a springC
Of a serener element and drankK2
Philosophy and for a little whileE2
She was allay'd till presently it turn'dL
Bitter within her and her spirit grewL2
Faint for undying watersA2
-
Then she cameM2
To the pure fount of God and is athirstL
No more save when the fever of the worldL
Falleth upon her she will go sometimesN2
Out in the starlight quietness and breatheO2
A holy aspiration after heavenP2
