She had been told that God made all the starsA
That twinkled up in heaven and now she stoodB
Watching the coming of the twilight onC
As if it were a new and perfect worldD
And this were its first eve How beautifulE
Must be the work of nature to a childF
In its first fresh impression Laura stoodB
By the low window with the silken lashG
Of her soft eye upraised and her sweet mouthH
Half parted with the new and strange delightI
Of beauty that she could not comprehendJ
And had not seen before The purple foldsK
Of the low sunset clouds and the blue skyL
That look'd so still and delicate aboveM
Fill'd her young heart with gladness and the eveN
Stole on with its deep shadows and she stillO
Stood looking at the west with that half smileP
As if a pleasant thought were at her heartQ
Presently in the edge of the last tintR
Of sunset where the blue was melted inS
To the faint golden mellowness a starT
Stood suddenly A laugh of wild delightI
Burst from her lips and putting up her handsU
Her simple thought broke forth expressivelyP
Father dear Father God has made a starT
