Nature's Lesson Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEEGHGH ICICJKJK LMLMENEN

We traveled by a mountain's edgeA
It was September calm and brightB
Nature had decked its rocky ledgeA
With flowers of varied hue and heightB
It seemed a miracle that theyC
Should flourish in that meager soilD
As noble spirits oftenest mayC
Gleam forth through poverty and toilD
-
Below were rippling sparkling streamsE
Through meadows kissed by shadowy hillsF
Reflecting autumn's peaceful dreamsE
Within those swift translucent rillsE
This lesson should these scenes impartG
As on the road of life we goH
To do our duty and take heartG
As flowers bloom and streamlets flowH
-
Perhaps in ages yet to beI
May flowers wave here e'en as todayC
These streams still rush in merry gleeI
To cheer and charm who here may strayC
But we upon Time's rapid tideJ
Like morning mists will disappearK
But if by faith to Christ alliedJ
Heaven's glory is both sure and clearK
-
We look from Nature to her GodL
We feel his presence from aboveM
We know that when the earth he trodL
He preached through her his wondrous loveM
What is there in our flitting yearsE
With this pure treasure can compareN
His love can wipe away our tearsE
His love can lighten every careN
