Moliere Books, Moliere poetry book The Miser Authors: Moliere
Publisher: Blurb
Published Date: 2019-02-19
Categories: Drama
This play was acted for the first time on September 9, 1668. In it, Molière has borrowed from Plautus, and has imitated several other authors, but he far surpasses them in the treatment of his subject. The picture of the miser, in whom love of money takes the place of all natural affections, who not only withdraws from family intercourse, but considers his children as natural enemies, is finely drawn, and renders Molière's Miser altogether more dramatic and moral than those of his predecessors. Molière acted the part of Harpagon.

When you've broken every promise, outraged every decency and slept your way through half of Europe - where do you turn as the clock starts to tick towards midnight? Neil Bartlett's new translation brings out all the dark undercurrents of Moliere's wickedly black comedy.

Moliere Books, Moliere poetry book The Miser and Other Plays Authors: Jean-Baptiste Moliere
Publisher: Penguin UK
Published Date: 2004-05-27
Categories: Drama
Molière combined all the traditional elements of comedy - wit, slapstick, spectacle and satire - to create richly sophisticated and enduringly popular dramas. The Miser is the story of Harpagon, a mean-spirited old man who becomes obsessed with making money out of the marriage of his children, while The Hypochondriac, another study in obsession, is a brilliant satire on the medical profession. The School for Wives, in which an ageing domestic tyrant is foiled in his plans to marry his young ward, provoked such an outcry that Molière followed it with The School for Wives Criticized - a witty retort to those who disapproved of the play's supposed immorality. And while Don Juan is the darkest and most tragic of all the plays in this collection, it still mocks the soullessness of the skinflint with scathing irony.

In the seventeenth century, Molière raised comedy to the pitch of great art and, three centuries later, his plays are still a source of delight. He created a new synthesis from the major comic traditions at his disposal. This collection demonstrates the range of Molière's comic vision, his ability to move between the broad and basic ploys of farce to the more subtle and sophisticated level of high comedy. The Misanthrope appears along with Such Preposterously Precious Ladies, Tartuffe, A Doctor Despite Himself, The Would-Be Gentleman, and Those Learned Ladies.

Moliere Books, Moliere poetry book Cyrano and Molière Authors: Moliere

After his death, Molière was gradually recognized in France as that country's most important dramatist. Along with this realization came a desire to write plays ABOUT the writer, his life on the stage, and his interaction with the other dramatists of his age, and also with King Louis XIV. Even Alexandre Dumas featured Molière as a character in his historical play, The Young Louis XIV. Molière himself was such a large, dynamic figure in real life that he made a perfect foil for later dramatists. Here are five plays by and about Molière: Molière at Ninon's, or, The Reading of Tartuffe, by René de Chazet and Jean-Baptiste Dubois; Scene Added for the Anniversary of Molière, by Charles Moreau; The King Is Waiting, by George Sand; Cyrano and Molière, by George Jubin; and The Love Doctor, by Molière. Great drama and great fun!

Eugene Field Poem
Suppose
 by Eugene Field

Suppose, my dear, that you were I
And by your side your sweetheart sate;
Suppose you noticed by and by
The distance 'twixt you were too great;
Now tell me, dear, what would you do?
I know-and so do you.

And when (so comfortably placed)
