Quand' il servo il signiorA
-
-
When masters bind a slave with cruel chainB
And keep him hope forlorn in bondage pentC
Use tames his temper to imprisonmentD
And hardly would he fain be free againE
Use curbs the snake and tiger and doth trainB
Fierce woodland lions to bear chastisementD
And the young artist all with toil forspentD
By constant use a giant's strength doth gainB
But with the force of flame it is not soF
For while fire sucks the sap of the green woodD
It warms a frore old man and makes him growF
With such fine heat of youth and lustihoodD
Filling his heart and teaching it to glowF
That love enfolds him with beatitudeD
If then in playful moodD
He sport and jest old age need no man blameG
For loving things divine implies no shameG
The soul that knows her aimG
Sins not by loving God's own counterfeitD
Due measure kept and bounds and order meetD
