Beauty's Intolerable Splendour Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A ABBAABBACDECDE

Se 'l foco alla bellezzaA
-
-
If but the fire that lightens in thine eyesA
Were equal with their beauty all the snowB
And frost of all the world would melt and glowB
Like brands that blaze beneath fierce tropic skiesA
But heaven in mercy to our miseriesA
Dulls and divides the fiery beams that flowB
From thy great loveliness that we may goB
Through this stern mortal life in tranquil wiseA
Thus beauty burns not with consuming rageC
For so much only of the heavenly lightD
Inflames our love as finds a fervent heartE
This is my case lady in sad old ageC
If seeing thee I do not die outrightD
'Tis that I feel thy beauty but in partE

Michelangelo Di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni
