The Drummer Boy Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCAA DDEEBBAA FFCCGGAA

You never know when war may comeA
And that is why I keep a drumA
For if all sudden in the nightB
From east or west came battle frightB
And you were sound asleep in bedC
And very soon to join the deadC
You then would gladly wish my drumA
Would warn you that the war had comeA
-
So that is why on afternoonsD
I tell the neighborhood my tunesD
Sometimes behind a fortress benchE
Or where the hedges make a trenchE
I beat the drum with all my mightB
While people look with awful frightB
Just as they would if war had comeA
And heard the warning of my drumA
-
They must be thankful I am sureF
Because they now may feel secureF
And rest so safe and sound in bedC
Without wild dreams of fearful dreadC
For now they hear me all the dayG
As round the yard I march and playG
To let them know if war should comeA
They'll get the warning of my drumA
