The Countersign Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDE FGHGIG JKFKIK JHKHKH ILKLML

Along Virginia's wondering roadsA
While armies hastened onB
To Beauregard's great Southern hostC
Manassas fields uponB
Came Colonel Smith's good regimentD
Eager for WashingtonE
-
But Colonel Smith must halt his menF
In a dangerous delayG
Though well he knows the countrysideH
To the distant host of greyG
He cannot join with BeauregardI
For Bull Run's bloody frayG
-
And does he halt for storm or fordJ
Or does he stay to dineK
Say No but death will meet his menF
Onward if moves the lineK
He dares not hurry to BeauregardI
Not knowing the countersignK
-
Flashed in the sun his waving swordJ
Who rides for me he criedH
And ask of the Chief the countersignK
Upon a daring rideH
Though never the lad come back againK
With the good that will betideH
-
I will send a letter to BeauregardI
The Colonel slowly saidL
The bearer dies at the pickets' lineK
But the letter shall be readL
When the pickets find it for the ChiefM
In the brave hand of the deadL
