The interlacing treesB
Arise in Gothic traceriesB
As if a vast cathedral deep and dimC
And through the solemn atmosphereD
The low winds hymnC
Such thoughts as solitude will hearE
To lead your way acrossB
Gray carpet aisles of mossB
Unto the chantry stallsB
The sumach candelabra are alightF
Along the cloister wallsB
Like chorister and acolyteF
The shrubs are vested whiteF
The dutiful monastic oakG
In his gray friar cloakG
Keeps penitential waysB
And solemn orisons of praiseB
For beads upon the cincture vineH
Red berries warm with color shineH
And to their constant rosaryI
The bedesmen firs inclineH
And fair as frescoes beI
Among the shrines of ItalyI
These lights and shadows areJ
Impalpable in gray and greenK
Upon the hills afarJ
And the gold westering sun betweenK
The music HarkL
Oh an it be no rapturous larkL
Yet has the lesser chantM
The blessedness of songN
The snowbird mendicantM
Intones the antiphonO
Et laboremus nosB
