A Rock A River A TreeA
Hosts to species long since departedB
Mark the mastodonC
The dinosaur who left dry tokensD
Of their sojourn hereE
On our planet floorF
Any broad alarm of their of their hastening doomG
Is lost in the gloom of dust and agesH
But today the Rock cries out to us clearly forcefullyA
Come you may stand upon myI
Back and face your distant destinyA
But seek no haven in my shadowJ
I will give you no hiding place down hereE
You created only a little lower thanK
The angels have crouched too long inL
The bruising darknessM
Have lain too longN
Face down in ignoranceO
Your mouths spelling wordsP
Armed for slaughterQ
The rock cries out today you may stand on meA
But do not hide your faceR
Across the wall of the worldS
A river sings a beautiful songN
Come rest here by my sideT
Each of you a bordered countryA
Delicate and strangely made proudU
Yet thrusting perpetually under siegeV
Your armed struggles for profitW
Have left collars of waste uponX
My shore currents of debris upon my breastY
Yet today I call you to my riversideT
If you will study war no moreF
Come clad in peace and I will sing the songsZ
The Creator gave to me when II
And the tree and stone were oneA2
Before cynicism was a bloody sear across your browB2
And when you yet knew you still knew nothingC2
The river sings and sings onX
There is a true yearning to respond toD2
The singing river and the wise rockE2
So say the Asian the Hispanic the JewD2
The African and Native American the SiouxD2
The Catholic the Muslim the French the GreekF2
The Irish the Rabbi the Priest the SheikhF2
The Gay the Straight the PreacherQ
The privileged the homeless the teacherQ
They hear They all hearE
The speaking of the treeA
Today the first and last of every treeA
Speaks to humankind Come to me here beside the riverQ
Plant yourself beside me here beside the riverQ
Each of you descendant of some passed onX
Traveller has been paid forF
You who gave me my first nameG2
You Pawnee Apache and SenecaH2
You Cherokee Nation who rested with meA
Then forced on bloody feetI2
Left me to the employment of other seekersJ2
Desperate for gain starving for goldK2
You the Turk the Swede the German the ScotL2
You the Ashanti the Yoruba the KruF
Bought sold stolen arriving on a nightmareF
Praying for a dreamM2
Here root yourselves beside meA
I am the tree planted by the riverF
Which will not be movedN2
I the rock I the river I the treeA
I am yours your passages have been paidO2
Lift up your faces you have a piercing needP2
For this bright morning dawning for youD2
History despite its wrenching painQ2
Cannot be unlived and if faced with courageR2
Need not be lived againS2
Lift up your eyes uponX
The day breaking for youD2
Give birth againS2
To the dreamM2
Women children menS2
Take it into the palms of your handsT2
Mold it into the shape of your mostU2
Private need Sculpt it intoD2
The image of your most public selfV2
Lift up your heartsW2
Each new hour holds new chancesH
For new beginningsX2
Do not be wedded foreverF
To fear yoked eternallyA
To brutishnessX2
The horizon leans forwardY2
Offering you space to place new steps of changeZ2
Here on the pulse of this fine dayA3
You may have the courageR2
To look up and out upon meA
The rock the river the tree your countryA
No less to Midas than the mendicantA3
No less to you now than the mastodon thenS2
Here on the pulse of this new dayA3
You may have the grace to look up and outA3
And into your sister's eyesX2
Into your brother's face your countryA
And say simplyA
Very simplyA
With hopeB3
Good morningC2
