Mother of Him we call the ChristA
No halo round thy brows we paintB
Incense and prayer we offer notC
Nor mind to title thee as saintB
-
And yet no woman's name of allD
With honour from the ages sentE
Mary is aureoled like thineF
With love and grief and glory blentE
-
Oh wisely was it that He choseG
Who the unwritten future readsH
To teach the after world through theeI
What cherishers Messiah needsH
-
Thou heard'st the angel's prophecyI
The tidings which the shepherds broughtE
Anna and Simeon praising GodE
And saw'st that star the Wise Men soughtE
-
Ah who of us could bear like theeI
With meekness God's triumphal lightE
Then still believing with His ChargeJ
At midnight take an exile's flightE
-
Throughout the Son's long helplessnessK
His good was to thine own preferredE
May we so serve and still like TheeI
Stand back to let His voice be heardE
-
Dispenser once of earthly thingsL
Thy Best Beloved thou didst seeI
God's hands for others blessing fullM
Could we be poor and glad like theeI
-
Soul pierced with sword like agonyI
Not felon's taunt nor soldier's jestE
Beside the God forsaken CrossN
Could drive thee from it like the restE
-
Christ's banner thou alone didst holdE
In face of all His foes displayedE
Valiant through all defeat and butE
Heart stricken that He was betrayedE
-
Ah Mary Could we stand like theeI
Steadfast and watch the vowed departE
And grieve for their defection lessO
Than for the Saviour's wounded heartE
-
How must the God who favour setE
On David once and kingly SaulD
And yet foresaw their wanderingsL
And loved them through and after allD
-
How must He seal the prophecyI
Declaring thee forever blestE
Whose whole life showed thy worthinessP
Of that pure Child thine arms had pressedE
-
O single hearted one to kissP
The lifeless and dishonored headE
Fondly as when its baby browQ
By angel wings was canopiedE
-
O self forgetful to rejoiceR
For that Heaven's entrance had been foundE
By the Beloved thou contentE
Thenceforth alone to close life's roundE
-
In the bright future sure though farS
Again as once the wide air ringsL
With praise to Christ Thy vigil endsT
Meek daughter of a hundred kingsL
-
Virgin may we partake thy joyU
When Heaven and loyal earth shall layV
At the pierced feet of David's sonW
A crown He will not put awayV
