His silent spirit from the placeA
Slid forth unseen amid the throngB
Of those whose love outlived disgraceA
Whose fealty to the last was strongB
'Midst homage 'neath Fate's adverse reignC
Paid to the star shorn of its raysD
How passed the Exile Lingering fainC
As never once in prouder daysD
-
The Mother and the Child were thereE
Discrowned and disinheritedF
No hand henceforth to right the heirE
New griefs to bow the golden headF
How passed Napoleon Prizing moreG
Old fame in camp and council wonH
Or fearless England's aegis o'erI
The future of her ally's sonH
-
Gate of that World we know not yetF
What thou beheld'st who may proclaimJ
Were spirit ranks in order setF
Haunting thy portals as he cameJ
With voices murmuring Our life torchK
Unspent was quenched at his behestF
Did bygone princes fill the porchK
Bourbon and Valois and the restF
-
How passed the soldier Cold and sternL
'Mid weaponless reproachful ghostsM
As when he led them forth to learnL
How fight the hardy German hostsM
How passed the Emperor where THEY gazedF
Once wearers of the ancient crownN
As one who knew its lustre blazedF
The brighter ere he laid it downN
-
How passed he brighter grows the dreamO
Past yon accusing spirit bandF
Beyond the scornful Old R gimeO
Another group of watchers standF
Those hands are stretched to greet him nowP
That once Charlemagne's proud sceptre wonH
While hastes Hortense with beaming browP
No longer banished from her sonH
