Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFG HAIAJEKG LAMANEOGThe rushes are black by the river bed | A |
And the sheep and the cattle stand | B |
Wistful eyed where the waters were | C |
In a waste of gravel and sand | B |
Or pass o'er their dying and dead to slake | D |
Their thirst at the slimy pool | E |
Shall they pine and perish in pangs of drought | F |
While Thy river O God is full | G |
- | |
The fields are furrowed the seed is sown | H |
But no dews from the heavens are shed | A |
And where shall the grain for the harvest be | I |
And how shall the poor be fed | A |
In waterless gullies they winnow the earth | J |
New turned by the miner's tool | E |
And the way farer faints 'neath his lightened load | K |
Yet the river of God is full | G |
- | |
For us O Father from tropic seas | L |
Let the clouds be filled that shed | A |
Rough rains upon Andes' eastward slope | M |
Soft snows on Him leh's head | A |
Freight for us as for others thy dark winged fleet | N |
That soon by the waters cool | E |
We may say with gladness Our need was great | O |
But the river of God was full | G |
