Serene upon the brink	D
An Indian mother stood	A

And then with skilful hand	A
Unmoored the birch canoe	C
Seized the light oar and placed	A
Her infants by her side	A
And steered the fragile bark	F
On through the rushing tide	A

Then fitfully and wild	A
In thrilling notes of woe	G
Swept down the rapid stream	H
The death song sad and low	G
And gathered on the marge	I
From many a forest glen	J
With frantic gestures rude	A
The red Dahcotah men	J
But onward sped the bark	F
Until it reached the height	A
Where mounts the angry spray	K
And raves the water's might	A
And whirling eddies swept	A
Into the gulf below	G
The smiles of infancy	L
And youth's maturer glow	G
The priestess of the rock	M
And white robed surges bore	N
The wronged and broken heart	A
To the far off Spirit Shore	N

Has drawn her shadowy veil	O
And solemn stars look forth	P
Serenely pure and pale	O
A spectre bark and form	Q
May still be seen to glide	A
In wondrous silence down	R
The Laughing Water's tide	A

The night bird's fitful plaint	A
And moaning forest tree	L
Amid the lulling chime	T
Of waters falling there	U
