The Laughing Water. - Indian Legends Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A ABCBAADA ECACAAFA AGHGIJAJFAKAAGLGMNAN AOPOQARASLALTUJU

The Indian name for the Falls of St Anthony signifies Laughing Water and here tradition says that a young woman of the Dahcotah tribe the father of her children having taken another wife unmoored her canoe above the fall and placing herself and children in it sang her death song as she went over the foaming declivityA
-
-
The sun went down the westA
As a warrior to his graveB
And touched with crimson hueC
The Laughing Water's waveB
And where the current sweptA
A quick convulsive floodA
Serene upon the brinkD
An Indian mother stoodA
-
With calm and serious gazeE
She watched the torrent blueC
And then with skilful handA
Unmoored the birch canoeC
Seized the light oar and placedA
Her infants by her sideA
And steered the fragile barkF
On through the rushing tideA
-
Then fitfully and wildA
In thrilling notes of woeG
Swept down the rapid streamH
The death song sad and lowG
And gathered on the margeI
From many a forest glenJ
With frantic gestures rudeA
The red Dahcotah menJ
But onward sped the barkF
Until it reached the heightA
Where mounts the angry sprayK
And raves the water's mightA
And whirling eddies sweptA
Into the gulf belowG
The smiles of infancyL
And youth's maturer glowG
The priestess of the rockM
And white robed surges boreN
The wronged and broken heartA
To the far off Spirit ShoreN
-
And often when the nightA
Has drawn her shadowy veilO
And solemn stars look forthP
Serenely pure and paleO
A spectre bark and formQ
May still be seen to glideA
In wondrous silence downR
The Laughing Water's tideA
And mingling with the breathS
Of low winds sweeping freeL
The night bird's fitful plaintA
And moaning forest treeL
Amid the lulling chimeT
Of waters falling thereU
The death song floats againJ
Upon the laden airU
