The ancient Highlanders believed the spirits of their departed friends continually present and that their imagined appearances and voices communicated warnings of approaching deathA
-
-
Oh set the bridal feast asideB
And bear the harp awayC
The coronach must sound insteadD
From solemn kirk yard grayC
-
I heard last eve at set of sunE
The death bell on the galeF
It was no earthly melodyG
The eglantine grew paleF
-
And leaf and blossom seemed to thrillH
With an unuttered prayerI
As fraught with desolateness wildJ
The strange notes stirred the airI
-
And on the rugged mountain heightK
Where snow and sunbeam meetL
That never yet in storm or shineM
Was trod by human feetL
-
A weird and spectral presence cameN
Between me and the lightK
The waving of a shadowy handO
That faded into nightK
-
I felt it was the first who leftP
Our little household bandO
The child with waving locks of goldQ
Now in the silent landO
-
And when the mist at morn aroseR
From Katrine's silvery waveS
A form of aspect ominousT
With pensive look and graveS
-
Moved from the waters towards the glenU
Where stands the holly treeG
'T was the brother who is sleeping lowV
Beneath the stormy seaG
-
And while to night the curfew bellW
Rang out with solemn chimeX
As soundeth o'er the buried yearY
The organ peal of timeX
-
And near the fragrant jessamineZ
I mused in garden gladeA2
A phantom form appeared to meG
Beneath the hawthorn shadeA2
-
The dews had wept their silent tearsB2
The moon was up on highC2
And every star was sphered with calmD2
Like an archangel's eyeC2
-
And melancholy music sweptE2
With cadence low and sweetL
Such as ascends when spirit wingsF2
Around a death bed meetL
-
O was it not a mother's heartG2
That gave that warning signM
The loving heart that used to thrillH
To every grief of mineM
-
I oft have deemed in sunny hoursH2
When life with love was fraughtI2
The nearness of the dead to usT
A fantasy of thoughtI2
-
But standing on the barrierJ2
I used to view with painK2
I feel the chains of severed loveL2
Are linking close againU
-
Another hand must smooth and blessM2
My father's silver hairI
Another voice must read to himN2
At morn and evening prayerI
-
The flowers that I have trained will bloomO2
But at another's sideB
And he I love will seek perchanceP2
A gentler fairer brideB
-
And soon another shade will hauntQ2
The echo and the gloomO2
With pining heart of restless loveL2
And omens of the tombO2
-
Then set the festal board asideB
And bear the harp awayC
The coronach must sound insteadD
From solemn kirk yard grayC
