The First Look Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDD EFGFHH GIJIII KILIBB BMNMOO PFQFRR

I heard the strokes of the midnight bellA
As they thrilled the quiet airB
And saw the soft white curtains waveC
In the lamp's uncertain glareB
And felt the breath of the July nightD
Laden with fragrance and warmth and blightD
-
I knew that scarcely an hour beforeE
With plaintive and feeble wailF
A spirit had entered the gates of timeG
A being helpless and frailF
That cradled beside me the stranger layH
Though I had not dared o'er her face to prayH
-
But roused by the voice of the midnight chimeG
O'er the little one I bentI
And soft sweet eyes were upraised to mineJ
As blue as the firmamentI
Eyes that had never beheld the dayI
Or the chastened light of the moonbeam's rayI
-
O wonderful meeting on the vergeK
Of Life and the dark BEYONDI
O wonderful glance from soul to soulL
United by tenderest bondI
The one corroded with earth and careB
The other as falling snow flakes fairB
-
The one oppressed with contrition's tearB
Familiar with grief and sinM
The other with naught but the angel's faceN
Who ushered the human inM
The one a wrestler with Fate's decreesO
The other environed with saintly easeO
-
The one acquainted with Death and changeP
And with anguish faint and paleF
The other as fresh as the earliest roseQ
That opened in Eden's valeF
Dear Lord that ever the blight should fallR
That sin should sully and Death appallR
