Night bent o'er the mountainsA
With aspect sereneB
The deep waters sleptC
'Neath the moon's pallid sheenB
And the stars in their coursesD
Moved noiseless on highE
As a soul when it cleavethF
In thought the blue skyE
-
The low winds were spentG
With the fever of dayH
And stirred scarce a leafI
Of the green wood's arrayH
And the white fleecy cloudsJ
Hovered light on the airK
Like an angel's wing bentG
For a penitent prayerK
-
Sleep hushed in the cityL
The tumult and strifeM
And calmed in the spiritN
The unrest of lifeM
But one where Mount LebanonO
Lifted its snowP
Slumbered not till the mornQ
Wakened earth with its glowP
-
Beneath the dark cedarsR
Majestic sublimeS
That for ages had mockedT
Both at tempest and TimeS
In whose tops the wild eagleU
His eyrie had madeV
She knelt with pale cheekW
In the damp mossy gladeV
-
The small hands were foldedX
In worship divineY
And the silent leaves thrilledZ
In that lone forest shrineY
With the voice of the pleaderK
That earnest and lowP
Was sad as the sea shell'sA2
And plaintive with woeP
-
She prayed not for lifeM
Though Youth's early bloomB2
Glowed on her fair cheekW
And recoiled from the tombB2
But a heart pure and strongC2
Sublimed by its painD2
A spirit attunedE2
To the seraph's bright strainD2
-
She saw not the dark boughsF2
That spectral and hoarK
With lattice work rudeG2
Arched her wide temple o'erK
She marked not their shadowsH2
Gigantic and dimI2
Her soul was communingJ2
In triumph with HimI2
-
With the Ancient of DaysK2
Who from mercy seat highE
Beheld the pale pleaderK
With vigilant eyeE
And Peace with white pinionO
Came down from His throneL2
And the gleam of her wingJ2
On that fair forehead shoneL2
-
O Thou that upholdestG2
The feeble and frailM2
And leadest the pilgrimN2
Through Life's narrow valeM2
When the days that are measuredG2
My spirit belowP
Shall have ceased to the pastG2
From the future to flowP
-
May the Summoner find meL
As placid and strongC2
As meet for enduranceO2
Of agony longC2
With a faith as divineY
And vision as clearK
As the watchers who weptG2
On the hills of Jud aP2
