An Incident Of The French Revolution And Reign Of RobespierreA
-
-
Day dawned above a city's martB
Yet not 'mid peace and prayerA
The shouts of frenzied multitudesC
Were on the thrilling airA
-
A guiltless man to death was ledD
Through crowded streets and wideE
And a fairy child with waving curlsF
Was clinging to his sideE
-
The father's brow with pride was calmG
But trusting and sereneH
The child's was like the Holy One'sI
In Raphael's paintings seenH
-
She shrank not from the heartless throngJ
Nor from the scaffold highK
But now and then with beaming smileL
Addressed her parent's eyeK
-
Athwart the golden flood of mornM
Was poised the wing of DeathN
As 'neath the fearful guillotineH
The doomed one drew his breathN
-
Then all of fiercest agonyO
The human heart can bearA
Was suffered in the brief caressP
The wild half uttered prayerA
-
Then she the child beseechinglyL
Upraised her eyes of blueL
And whispered while her cheek grew paleL
I am to go with youL
-
The murmur of impatient fiendsQ
Rang in her infant earA
And purpose strong woke in her heartB
And spoke in accent clearA
-
They tore my mother from our sideE
In the dark prison's cellL
Her eyes were filled with tears she hadR
No time to say farewellL
-
And you were all that loved me thenS
And you are pale with careA
And every night a silver threadD
Has mingled with your hairA
-
My mother used to tell me ofT
A better land afarA
I've seen it through the prison barsU
Where burns the evening starA
-
O let us find a new home thereA
I will be brave and trueL
You cannot leave me here aloneV
O let me die with youL
-
The gentle tones were drowned by shrillL
And long protracted criesW
The father on his darling gazedX
The child looked on the skiesW
-
Anon far up the cloudless blueL
Unseen by mortal eyeK
God's angels with two spirits passedY
To purer realms on highK
-
The one was touched with earthly huesZ
And dim with earthly careA
The other as a lily's cupA2
Unutterably fairA
