'Neath their green and cool cathedralsA
In the garden lilies bloomB
Casting to the fresh Spring ZephyrsC
Peal on peal of sweet perfumeB
Often have I pausing near themD
When the sunset flushed the skyE
Seen the coral bells vibratingF
With their fragrant harmonyG
-
And within my quiet dwellingF
I have now a Lily fairH
Whose young spirit's sweet Spring buddingF
Watch I with unfailing careH
God in placing her beside meG
Made my being most completeI
And my heart keeps time for everJ
With the music of her feetI
-
I remember not while gazingF
In her earnest eyes of blueK
That the earth has aught of sorrowL
Aught less innocent and trueK
And the restlessness and longingF
Wakened by the cares of dayM
With the burden and the tumultN
In her presence fall awayM
-
Shield my Lily Holy FatherJ
Shield her from the whirlwind's mightO
But protracted sunshine temperJ
With a soft and starry nightO
'Neath the burning suns of SummerJ
Withered scorched the spring flower liesP
Human hearts contract when strangersC
Long to clouds and tearful eyesP
-
Give her purpose strong and holyG
Faith and self devotion highE
These Life's common by ways brightenQ
Every hope intensifyE
Teach her all the brave enduranceR
That the sons of earth requireJ
May she with a patient laborJ
To the great and good aspireS
-
Should some mighty grief oppress herJ
Heavier than she can bearH
Oh sustain her by Thy presenceR
Hear and answer Thou her prayerH
And whene'er the storms of winterJ
Round my precious Lily reignT
To a fairer clime transplant herJ
There to live and bloom againU
