The town of Pleurs situated among the Alps and containing about two thousand five hundred inhabitants was overwhelmed in by the falling of Mount Conto The avalanche occurred in the night and no trace of the village or any of its inhabitants could ever after be discoveredA
-
-
'T was eve and Mount ContoA
Reflected in nightA
The sunbeams that fledA
With the monarch of lightA
As great souls and nobleB
Reflect evermoreC
The sunshine that gleamsD
From Eternity's shoreC
-
A slight crimson veilE
Robed the snow wreath on highF
The shadow an angelB
In passing threw byF
And city and valleyG
In mantle of grayH
Seemed bowed like a mournerI
In silence to prayH
-
And the sweet vesper bellJ
With a clear measured chimeK
Like the falling of minutesL
In the hour glass of TimeK
From mountain to mountainM
Was echoed afarN
Till it died in the distanceO
As light in a starN
-
The young peasant motherI
Had cradled to restA
The infant that carolledA
In peace on her breastA
The laborer ere seekingP
His couch of reposeQ
Told his beads in the shade ofR
A fortress of snowsQ
-
Up the cloudless sereneS
Moved the silver sphered NightA
The reveller's palaceT
Was flooded with lightA
And the cadence of musicU
The dancer's gay songV
In harmony wondrousT
Went up 'mid the throngV
-
The criminal countedA
With visage of woeW
The chiming of hoursX
That were left him belowW
And the watcher so paleE
In the chamber of DeathY
Bent over the dyingP
With quick stifled breathY
-
The watchman the midnightA
Had told with shrill cryF
When through the deep silenceO
What sounded on highF
With a terrible roarC
Like the thunders sublimeK
Whose voices shall heraldA
The passing of TimeK
-
On came the destroyerI
One crash and one thrillZ
Each pulse in that cityA
For ever stood stillZ
The blue arch with gloryA
Was mantled by dayA
When the traveller passedA
On his perilous wayA
-
Lake valley and forestA
In sunshine were clearA2
But when of that villageB2
In wonder and fearA2
He questioned the landscapeC2
With terror struck eyeF
The mountains in majestyA
Pointed on highF
-
The strong arm of LoveR
Struggled down through the mouldA
The miner dug deepD2
For the jewels and goldA
And workmen delved agesE2
That sepulchre o'erI
But found of the cityA
A trace never moreC
-
And now on the heightA
Of that fathomless tombF2
The fair Alpine flowersX
In loveliness bloomF2
And the water falls chantA
Through their minster of snowW
A mass for the spiritsG2
That slumber belowW
