My native isle my native isleA
For ever round thy sunny steepB
The low waves curl with sparkling foamC
And solemn murmurs deepB
While o'er the surging waters blueD
The ceaseless breezes throngE
And in the grand old woods awakeF
An everlasting songE
-
The sordid strife and petty caresG
That crowd the city's streetH
The rush the race the storm of LifeI
Upon thee never meetH
But quiet and contented heartsJ
Their daily tasks fulfilD
And meet with simple hope and trustK
The coming good or illD
-
The spireless church stands plain and brownL
The winding road besideM
The green graves rise in silence nearN
With moss grown tablets wideM
And early on the Sabbath mornO
Along the flowery sodP
Unfettered souls with humble prayerQ
Go up to worship GodP
-
And dearer far than sculptured faneR
Is that gray church to meS
For in its shade my mother sleepsT
Beneath the willow treeS
And often when my heart is raisedU
By sermon and by songE
Her friendly smile appears to meS
From the seraphic throngE
-
The sunset glow the moonlit streamV
Part of my being areW
The fairy flowers that bloom and dieX
The skies so clear and farW
The stars that circle Night's dark browY
The winds and waters freeS
Each with a lesson all its ownZ
Are monitors to meS
-
The systems in their endless marchA2
Eternal truth proclaimB2
The flowers God's love from day to dayC2
In gentlest accents nameB2
The skies for burdened hearts and faintD2
A code of Faith prepareQ
What tempest ever left the HeavenE2
Without a blue spot thereQ
-
My native isle my native isleD
In sunnier climes I've strayedF2
But better love thy pebbled beachG2
And lonely forest gladeF2
Where low winds stir with fragrant breathH2
The purple violet's headI2
And the star grass in the early SpringJ2
Peeps from the sear leaf's bedI2
-
I would no more of strife and tearsG
Might on thee ever meetH
But when against the tide of yearsK2
This heart has ceased to beatH
Where the green weeping willows bendL2
I fain would go to restM2
Where waters chant and winds may sweepB
Above my peaceful breastM2
