Little Kate Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEE FGHGII JKLKMM ENANOO PQRQKK SRSFTT UVSVWE

Beside me in the golden lightA
That slants upon the floorB
She twines the many colored silksC
Her dimpled fingers o'erD
Uplifting now and then her eyeE
Or praise or blame in mine to spyE
-
For her sweet sake I've cast asideF
The books I've loved so wellG
And given up my being toH
Affection's mighty spellG
Ambition's visions vanish allI
Before the music of her callI
-
The fancy of the past that lentJ
To jewels bright and rareK
Ascendency at every birthL
In this our planet's airK
Hath to October's children givenM
The opal with its hues of HeavenM
-
The golden sunlight in the skyE
The red leaf on the plainN
Beneath the opal's changeful lightA
Hope and Misfortune reignN
And mid gay leaves of wondrous dyesO
My darling first unclosed her eyesO
-
I cannot in the future lookP
The augury to proveQ
But earthly joys and earthly woesR
Must human spirits moveQ
And she like all must strive with careK
Disasters meet and suffering bearK
-
But I will teach her hopefullyS
To meet what Fate betidesR
To live and labor earnestlyS
In narrow path or wideF
And with salt tears on paling cheekT
A benediction still to speakT
-
And if in some sweet inner sphereU
Some home of love apartV
An angel's duty she fulfilS
With but a woman's heartV
Haply the red leaf in its advent mayW
Find Hope o'er sorrow dominant for ayeE
