Lines To D. G. T., Of Sherwood Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLM NONO PQMQ RSLG RTRT UALA

Blessings on thee noble boyA
With thy sunny eyes of blueB
Speaking in their cloudless depthsC
Of a spirit pure and trueB
-
In thy thoughtful look and calmD
In thy forehead broad and highE
We have seemed to meet againF
One whose home is in the skyE
-
Thou to Earth art still a strangerG
To Life's tumult and unrestH
Angel visitants aloneI
Stir the fountains in thy breastH
-
Thou hast yet no Past to shadowJ
With a fear the Future's lightK
And the Present spreads before theeL
Boundless as the InfiniteM
-
But each passing hour must wakenN
Energies that slumber nowO
Manhood with its fire and actionN
Stamp that fair unfurrowed browO
-
Into Life's sublime arenaP
Opening through the world's broad martQ
Bear thy Mother's gentle spiritM
And her kind and loving heartQ
-
With exalted hope and purposeR
To the great and good aspireS
Downward in unsullied gloryL
Hand the honor of thy sireG
-
With that love for Truth and JusticeR
Future annals shall declareT
Highest proof of moral greatnessR
Nobly live and bravely dareT
-
Cloudless pass thine infant daysU
Childhood bring thee naught but joyA
Manhood thought and dignityL
Blessings on thee noble boyA
