Through the half curtained window stoleA
An Autumn sunset's glowB
As languid on my couch I layC
With pulses weak and lowB
-
And then methought a presence stoodD
With shining feet and fairE
Amid the waves of golden lightF
That rippled through the airE
-
And laid upon my heaving breastG
With earnest glance and trueH
A babe whose fair and gentle browI
No shade of sorrow knewH
-
A solemn joy was in my heartJ
Immortal life was givenK
To Earth upon her battle fieldL
To discipline for HeavenK
-
Soft music thrilled the quiet roomM
An unseen host were nighN
Who left the infant pilgrim atO
The threshold of our skyN
-
A new strange love woke in my heartJ
Defying all controlA
As on the soft air rose and fellP
That birth hymn for a soulA
-
And now again the Autumn skiesQ
As on that evening shineR
When from a trance of agonyS
I woke to joy divineR
-
That boundless love is in my heartJ
That birth hymn on the airE
I clasp in mine with grateful faithT
A tiny hand in prayerE
-
And bless the God who guides my wayC
That mid this world so wideU
I day by day am walking withV
An angel by my sideU
