Saturday Night Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDAA EECCFGHI JJKKLLLLLL MMENOOPPAA QQCCFGHI

Saturday night in the crowded townA
Pleasure and pain going up and downA
Murmuring low on the ear there beatB
Echoes unceasing of voice and feetB
Withered age with its load of careC
Come in this tumult of life to shareC
Childhood glad in its radiance briefD
Happiest hearted or bowed with griefD
Meet alike as the stars look downA
Week by week on the crowded townA
-
And in a kingdom of mysteryE
Rapt from this weariful world to seeE
Magic sights in the yellow glareC
Breathing delight in the gas lit airC
Careless of sorrow of grief or painF
Two by two again and againG
Strephon and Chloe together moveH
Walking in Arcady land of loveI
-
What are the meanings that burden allJ
These murmuring voices that rise and fallJ
Tragedies whispered of secrets toldK
Over the baskets of bought and soldK
Joyous speech of the lately wedL
Broken lamentings that name the deadL
Endless runes of the gossip's redeL
And gathered home with the weekly needL
Kindly greetings as neighbours meetL
There in the stir of the busy streetL
-
Then is the glare of the gaslight rayM
Gifted with potency strange to dayM
Records of time written historyE
Flash into sight as each face goes byN
There as the hundreds slow moving goO
Each with his burden of joy or woeO
Souls in the meeting of stranger's eyesP
Startled this kinship to recogniseP
Meet and part as the stars look downA
Week by week on the crowded townA
-
And still in the midst of the busy humQ
Rapt in their dream of delight they comeQ
Heedless of sorrow of grief or careC
Wandering on in enchanted airC
Far from the haunting shadow of painF
Two by two again and againG
Strephon and Chloe together moveH
Walking in Arcady land of loveI
