IN the streets of Bethlehem sang the childrenA
So merry and so shrillB
'He shall have sweet cedars in his gardenA
And a house on Hermon HillB
He shall have the king's daughter for his fellowC
A king's crown to bind upon his head 'D
And with bracken buds and straw brown and yellowC
Mary made His bedE
-
In the streets of Nazareth sang the childrenA
So clearly and so sweetF
'He shall lead us to the spoiling of the nationsG
He shall bruise them with his feetF
His standards shall outface the stars for numberH
Red as field lilies when the rains are done '-
And Mary heard them singing in her slumberH
And woke to kiss her SonA
-
In the streets of Jerusalem the childrenA
Sang passing to their playI
'The king's daughter waits in her apparelJ
All glorious as dayI
We charge you O ye watchmen of your pityK
Reveal us our belov d call his name '-
And the shadow of a cross beyond the cityK
Fell softly o'er their gameL
-
In the ways of all the world sing the childrenA
'We know Him we have named Him He is oursM
Like leaves we have fluttered to His shadowC
He has gathered us as flowersM
And when the bud falls all too soon for blossomN
And when the play has wearied of its charmO
He bears the tired lambs within His bosomN
And the young lambs in His arm '-
