ON Lac Sainte Irene the mornB
Lay rimmed with pine and roped with mistC
The old moon hid her silver hornB
In shadow that the sun had kissedC
One went by like a wandering soulD
And followed everE
By reed and riverE
The silent canoe of the lake patrolD
-
On Lac Sainte Irene the noonF
Lay wolf like waiting by her hillsG
No voice was heard but the sad loonF
And the wild throated whip poor willsG
But one went by on the bitter flawH
And followed everE
By rapid and riverE
The swift canoe of the white man's lawH
-
On Lac Sainte Irene the mooseI
Broke from his balsams breathing hotJ
The bittern and the great wild gooseI
Pled south before the sudden shotJ
One fled with them like a hunted soulD
And followed everE
By ford and riverE
The little canoe of the lake patrolD
-
On Lac Sainte Irene the blueK
Vast arch of night was starred and deepL
No footsteps scared the caribouK
Nor waked the wolverine from his sleepL
Loosed indeed was the hunted soulD
And homeward everE
By rapid and riverE
Slipped the canoe of the lake patrolD
