UNDER the fluent folds of needleworkA
Where Balkis prick'd the histories of kingsB
Once great as he that were as greatly lovedC
Solomon stooped and saw the dusk unfoldD
Over the apple orchards like a flowerE
'O bloom of eve ' he said 'diviner lossF
Of all light gave us dove of the whole worldG
Bearing the branch of peace the dark sweet boughH
Endure a little longer ere full nightI
Comes stark from God and terrible with starsJ
Eternal as He or loveK
-
Now no one wakesL
But a lean gardener by my apricotsM
Sweeping the withered leaves the yellowing leavesN
Down the wind's road Perish our years with themO
Our griefs our little hungers our poor sinsP
Leaves that the Lord hath scattered He shall quenchQ
The fierce impetuous torches of the sunR
Yea from our dead dust He shall quicken kingsB
Unleash new battles sharpen spears unbornS
Shadow on shadow but His stars remainT
Immortal and love immortal crowned with them '-
-
Night came and all the hosts thereof He sawU
Arcturus clear the doorways of the cloudV
And One that followed with his shining sonsW
In the likeness of a gardener that strodeX
Over the windy hollows of the skyY
And with a great broom drave the stars in heapsZ
The yellow stars the little withering starsJ
Faint drifts along the darkness New stars cameA2
Budded and flowered and fell These too He sweptB2
And all the heavens were changedC2
-
Then Solomon stoodD2
Silent nor ever turned to the Queen's kissE2
