I feel like you just left the elevator to get on your floor
And i stayed
But my heart followed you
And the elevator doors slammed on my heartstrings.
And I’m left hanging there. Lifeless.
But you just keep walking. You’re moving along, going on your journey, not hearing everything behind you. Not seeing.
And why would I ask for your help when we agreed to get on different floors?
Why would I interrupt you on your journey
Keep you from going where you need to go
Just because I’m hurting
This isn’t my journey
I just got on the elevator
That’s all I did.
Yet I’m hanging.

Poet's note: This poem is inspired by heartbreak, feeling strung along while someone moves on effortlessly. I wanted to emphasize the painful feeling in the heart with these specific emotions. Feeling pulled, strung along, left behind, and a very specific hurt. Knowing that they’re completely oblivious to what they’ve done to you and the hurt they’re putting you through. This poem is inspiring because the analogy is very powerful.
