I leave my child to Heaven And with these wordsA
Upon her lips the Lady Mildred passedB
Unto the rest prepared for her pure soulC
Words that meant only this I cannot trustD
Unto her earthly parent my young childE
So leave her to her heavenly Father's careF
And Heaven was gentle to the motherlessG
And fair and sweet the maiden Gladys grewH
A pure white rose in the old castle setI
The while her father rioted abroadJ
-
But as the day drew near when he should giveK
By his dead lady's will his child her ownL
He having basely squandered all her wealthM
To him intrusted to his land returnedN
And thrilled her trusting heart with terrors vagueO
Of peril of some shame to come to himP
Did she not yield unto his prayer commandQ
That she would to Our Lady's convent goR
Forget the world and save him from disgraceS
-
But hidden as she had been all her lifeT
From tender human ties she loved the worldU
With all her loving heart the fresh free worldU
That God had made and this life seemed to herV
As but a living death A living tombW
The harsh stone walls that from the convent frownedX
Upon the peaceful valley sweet with flowersY
The beautiful green valley threaded byZ
Bright rivulets that sought the quiet lakeA2
Dear haunts sought daily by her maiden feetB2
And wilt thou not for my sake and thou shaltC2
To save thy sire from shame so wore the daysD2
And still she did not promise though she weptE2
At his wild pleadings trembled at his rageF2
Then of her mother's dying words he thoughtG2
Her dying words I leave my child to HeavenH2
And twisting them with his own wishes woveI2
A chain therewith that bound her wavering willJ2
A chain made mighty by the golden threadsK2
Of rev'rence and of holy memoriesL2
And so with heavy heart she gave her vowM2
That in the autumn she would leave the worldU
But first for one free summer did she prayN2
-
And through those bright spring days she roamed abroadJ
And poured upon the winds her low complaintsO2
The while her dark soft eyes sought all the earthP2
The beauteous earth that she too soon must leaveQ2
And all her mournful murmurs ended thusR2
With this sad cry of Oh the happy worldU
Ended with these low words as a sighZ
I will obey but oh the happy worldU
-
Oh wondrous beauty of the morning skiesS2
Oh wide green fields with beady dew impearledU
The lark soars upward singing as she fliesS2
Oh wave of free swift wings oh happy worldU
-
Oh wordless wonder of the evening skyZ
Far ivory citadels with flags unfurledU
Deep sapphire seas where rosy fleets float byZ
The golden shores remote oh happy worldU
-
Oh my blue violets by the laughing brookT2
My shy sweet darlings in your green leaves curledU
Bright eyes sometime you will all vainly lookT2
For me your lover Oh the happy worldU
-
So passed the days of spring and she must signU2
Dull papers to appease the hungry lawV2
And to the castle down a writer cameW2
No graybeard old and dryer than his tomesX2
A tall fair faced youth with bright bold gazeD2
And blood that leaped afresh like crimson wineU2
Rash blood that led him to leap o'er a gateU
Five barred within the mossy park uponY2
The knight's old stumbling steed that played him falseZ2
To its own harm for which it lost its lifeT
More fortunate the youth though bruised heA3
And bleeding from his many grievous woundsB3
And Gladys tended him with gentlest careF
Till love crept in and took the place of painC3
And in her heart took Pity's weeping placeS
And dwelt a king He knew she was the brideU
Of Heaven not to be vexed with earthly loveD3
But yet upon the last night of his stayU
As by the lake's low marge he met the maidU
And saw her soft eyes fall before his ownL
He laid an almond blossom in her handU
A blossom that both sweet and bitter isE3
And said but this Say is dear love a dreamF3
-
Nay not a dream she murmured looking outU
To where the light upon the waters layU
A golden pathway leading to the sunH2
Dear love the wakening is this life we liveG3
Is but a dream Then with a sudden hopeH3
He would have caught her hands but no she claspedU
Them o'er the snowy muslin on her breastU
And on her heart like drops of crimson bloodU
There lay the almond blossoms bitter sweetU
And far away her pure eyes looked adownH2
That shining path across the summer seaA3
Nay life a long dream is a sleep that lastsI3
Until we waken in the land of loveD3
But though thus calmly did she speak to himP
When he had gone to hide his breaking heartU
As best he might to bravely bide his timeJ3
And do his life work as she bade him doU
Then all her lonely haunts echoed this cryZ
This cry of deeper anguish Oh my heartU
-
Why did I pray for one more summer brightU
The outward world but held me in time pastU
Now life and love have added links of mightU
A chain that fetters me that holds me fastU
I will I will obey but oh my heartU
-
My life was like some little mountain springK3
By slight waves stirred till some deep overflowR
Swift breaks its peace then with its risen kingK3
Down to the mighty deep it needs must goR
Thus did I follow love but oh my heartU
-
For dear love sought me claimed me for his ownH2
And called me with his voice so strong so lowR
I followed unto bliss thou hapless oneH2
I did bethink me of my cruel vowM2
The vow I will obey but oh my heartU
-
And through the long still nights this cry was hersY
As on her couch she lay till dreary dawnH2
Her large eyes dark with horror looking outU
Upon the pitchy darkness unafraidU
And as the breathings of the new spring breezeL2
Soft sights of sad complaint to autumn's stormsL3
That hold the burdened sorrow of a yearM3
Was this her sigh of oh the happy worldU
To this despairing cry of oh my heartU
And as the year's late winds leave pale and chillJ2
The earth so did this weary cry of hersY
So oft repeated leave her lips like snowR
And oft the lonely midnight heard her moanH2
Of hopes foregone that women hold most dearM3
-
No little ones to ever cling to meA3
In closest love look on me through his eyesS2
And call me mother bless me with his smileN3
Then low in tearful prayer her voice would soundU
Despairing wailing through the lonely roomW
The silent turret chamber steep and highZ
Thou maiden mother Mary knows my heartU
Thou who didst love and suffer look on meA3
Oh pity me sweet mother of the ChristU
-
Then would the passion of her woe die outU
In dreary calm and as a chidden childU
Who cries himself to rest sobs in his sleepO3
So pitifully would sound the latest wordsA
I will I will be patient and obeyU
But all the long days' silent anguish allP3
These secret trysts she kept alone with painH2
Wore her meek face till like a spirit's lookedU
It gleaming white from out her shadowy hairF
And so the last day came the day of doomW
The dreaded day when she should leave the worldU
-
But He who holdeth little useless birdsA
In His protecting care looked tenderlyA3
Upon this patient soul so sorely triedU
This sweet soul purified by all its painH2
For on this day so fair a morn it seemedU
A heavenly peace sunk down to this sad earthP2
From gate ajar the bright and pearly gateU
Swung widely open for an angel guestU
A faithful servant climbed the winding stairF
Sent by her eager father with the dawnH2
To rouse her tell her that the hour had comeQ3
When she to save his name should leave the worldU
And as the woman stood beside the couchR3
She said Sweet soul she talks out in her sleepO3
For there she lay with closed eyes murmuring lowR
With mournful brow and sad lips oh dear loveD3
Then cried out with a sob 'tis not a dreamF3
Then spake of blood red blossoms bitter sweetU
And with her white lips sighing this she sunkS3
Into what seemed to be a dreamless sleepO3
-
And as the loving servant weeping stoodU
Loath to awake her to her evil doomW
She opened her large violet eyes and gazedU
Upon the morning sunlight stealing inH2
The clear light trembling growing on the wallP3
And as she looked her eyes grew like the eyesS2
Of blessed angels looking on their LordU
And high toward Heaven she lifted up her handsT3
Then clasped them in content upon her breastU
And cried out in a glad voice oh my heartU
And with such glory lighting up her faceS
As if the flood of joy had filled her heartU
And overrun her lips with blissful smilesU3
She left the world and saved her sire from shameW2
