Is his form hidden by some cliff or cragA
Or does he loiter on the shelving shoreB
We know not though we know he waits for usC
Somewhere upon the road that lies beforeB
-
And when he bids us we must follow himD
Must leave our half drawn nets our houses landsE
And those we love the most and best ah theyF
In vain will cling to us with pleading handsE
-
He will not wait for us to gird our robesG
And be they white as saints or soiled and dimD
We can but gather them around our formH
And take his icy hand and follow himD
-
Oh will our palm cling to another palmI
Loath loath to loose our hold of love's warm graspJ
Or shall we free our hand from the hand of griefK
And reach it gladly out to meet his claspJ
-
Sometimes I marvel when we two shall meetL
When I shall hear that stealthy step and seeM
The unseen form that haunteth mortal dreamsN
The stern browed face the eyes of mysteryM
-
Shall I be waiting for some wished for wealthO
Impatient by the shore of a purple seaM
But when the vessel's keel grates on the sandP
Will HE lean down its side and call to meM
-
Shall I in thymy pastures cool and sweetL
See the lark soaring through the rosy airQ
Ah then will his dark face look down on meM
'Neath the white splendor of the morning starR
-
Shall I be resting from the noonday blazeS
In the rich summer of a blossoming landP
And idly glancing through the lotus leavesT
Behold the shadow of his beckoning handP
-
Or in some inland village shaded deepU
With silence brooding o'er the quiet placeV
Shall I look from some lattice crowned with flowersW
In the calm twilight and behold his faceV
-
Or shall I over such a lonely wayF
Beset with fears my weary footsteps wendX
So desolate that I shall greet his faceV
With joy as a desired and welcome friendX
-
Oh little matters it when we shall meetL
Upon the quiet shore or on the seaM
If he shall lead us to the golden gateY
Dear Lord if he shall lead us unto TheeM
