I sit in the cloud and the darknessA
Where I lost you peerless oneB
Your bright face shines upon fairer landsC
Like the dawning of the sunB
And what to you is the rustic youthD
You sometimes smiled uponE
-
You have roamed through mighty citiesF
By the Orient's gleaming seaG
Down the glittering streets of VeniceA
And soft skied ArabyH
Life to you has been an anthemI
But a solemn dirge to meG
-
For everywhere by Rome's bright hillsJ
Or by the silvery RhineK
You win all hearts to you where'erL
Your glancing tresses shineK
But darling the love of the manyG
Is not a love like mineK
-
Last night I heard your voice in my dreamsM
I woke with a joyous thrillN
To hear but the half awakened birdsO
For the dark dawn lingered stillN
And the lonesome sound of the watersP
At the foot of Carey's hillN
-
Oh the pines are dark on Carey's hillN
And the waters are black belowQ
But they shone like waves of jasperL
Upon one day I knowQ
The day I bore you out of the streamR
With your face as white as snowQ
-
You lay like a little lamb in my armsS
So frail a thing so weakT
And my coward lips said burning wordsO
They never had dared to speakT
If they had not felt the chill of your browU
And the marble of your cheekT
-
Life had been but a bitter giftV
That I fain would have thrown awayW
But I could have thanked my God on my kneesF
For giving me life that dayW
As I took you lying so helplessA
From the gates of death awayW
-
How your noble kinsmen laughed and weptX
O'er their treasure snatched from the floodY
And your white faced brother brought me goldZ
You loved him or I couldA2
Have obeyed the fiend that told meG
To curse him where he stoodA2
-
Gold Oh darling they had no needB2
Such insults to repeatC2
I knew the Heaven was above the earthD2
I knew I knew my sweetC2
I was not worthy to touch the shoesE2
That covered your dainty feetC2
-
I knew as you laid your hand in mineK
So kind as I turned awayW
That we were severed as wide apartF2
That hour as we are to dayW
And you in your stately English homeG2
So far so far awayW
-
That soft white hand you laid in mineK
With a smile as I turned to goQ
Oh Lady Maud I marvelH2
If you ever stoop so lowQ
As to wonder what those tears meantI2
That glittered on its snowQ
-
But I know if you had dreamed the truthD
Your beautiful dark brown eyesJ2
Would only have grown more gentleH2
With a sorrowful surpriseJ2
For a nobler and a kinder heartF2
Ne'er beat beneath the skiesJ2
-
You never meant to give me painK2
But oh 'twas a cruel goodA2
I so low in the world's esteemR
You of such noble bloodY
That you stooped to as gentle words and deedsL2
As ever an angel couldA2
-
I blessed you for your brightnessA
When you came unto our shoreM2
For the dull earth caught a beautyG
It never had beforeM2
But you left a lonesome shadowQ
That will lie there evermoreM2
-
How proud the good ship bore youN2
Adown the golden bayW
The sun's last light upon its sailsO2
I stood there mournfullyH2
For I know it left the darknessA
Took the sunlight all awayW
