A long low waste of yellow sandA
Lay shining northward far as eye could reachB
Southward a rocky bluff rose highC
Broken in wild fantastic shapesD
Near by one jagged rock towered highC
And o'er the waters leaned like giant grimE
Striving to peer into the mysteriesF
The ocean whispers of continuallyG
And covers with her soft treacherous faceH
For the rest the sun was sinking lowI
Like a great golden globe into the seaG
Above the rock a bird was flyingJ
In dizzy circles with shrill criesK
And on a plank floated from some wreckL
With shreds of musty seaweedM
Clinging to it yet a woman satN
Holding a child within her armsO
A sweet faced woman looking out to seaG
With dark patient eyes and singing to the childP
And this the song she in the sunset sangQ
-
Thine eyes are brown my beauty brown and brightR
Drowned deep in languor now the angel SleepS
Is clasping thee within her arms so whiteR
Bearing thee up the dreamland's sunny steepS
Oh baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
Thy father's boat I see its swaying shroudT
Like a white sea gull swinging to and froI
Against the ledges of a crimson cloudT
A tiny bird with flutt'ring wing of snowI
Oh baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
Thy father toils beyond the harbor barU
And singing at his toil he thinks of theeG
Lit by the red lamp of the evening starU
Home will he come will come to thee and meG
Oh baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
His cabin shall be bright with flowers sweetV
The table shall be set the fire shall glowI
We'll wait within the door his coming steps to greetV
And if my eye be sad he will not knowI
Oh baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
He will not pause to ponder things so slightR
He is not one a smile to prize or missW
Yet he would shield us with a strong arm's mightR
And he will meet us with a loving kissW
Oh baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
But would I could forget those other daysX
When if with gayer gleam mine eyes had shoneY
Or shade of sorrow gentlest eyes would gazeX
With tender questioning into my ownY
Oh baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
Thine eyes are brown thou hast thy father's eyesK
But those my darling those were clear and blueZ
Ah me how sorrowfully that sea bird criesK
Cries for its mate oh tender bird and trueZ
My baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
Oh of my truest love well worthy heG
And near was I ah nearest to his heartA2
But ships are parted on the dreary seaG
Swept by the waves forever swept apartA2
Oh baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
And sometimes sad eyed women sighing sayB2
Sweet love is lost all that remains is restC2
So in their weakness they are lured to layB2
Their head upon some strong and loving breastC2
Oh baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
Our cabin stands upon the dreary sandsD2
And it is sad to be alone aloneY
But on my bosom thou hast lain thy handsD2
Near to me art thou near my precious oneE2
My baby sleep my baby sleepS
-
The red light faded as she sungF2
A chill breeze rose and swept across the seaG
She drew her cloak still closer round the childP
And turned toward the cabinE2
As she went a faint glow glimmeredP
In the east and slowly roseG2
The silver crescent of the moonH2
Another paler light than the warm sunset glowI
But clear enough to guide her homeI2
