'Twas a bleak dull moor that stretched beforeA
The low stone porch of the cottage doorA
And standing there was youth and maidB
He for long journeying seemed arrayedB
And the sunset flamed in the burnished westC
And a proud throb beat in the young man's breastC
As he whispered Sweet will you come to meD
In that fairer land beyond the seaD
-
The wonderful western land in dreamsE
I have seen its prairies green and gleamsE
Of its shining waterfalls valleys fairF
And a voice in my dreams has called me thereF
Where man is a man and not a clodC
And must bend the knee to none but GodC
A home will I make for thee and meD
In that fairer land beyond the seaD
-
But the cruel seas where the fated shipsG
Go down to their doom But he kissed the lipsG
The trembling lips till they smiled againH
And his bright hopes cheered her heart's dull painI
And she laid her head on his hopeful breastC
And looked with him to the glowing westC
And said I will come I will come to theeD
To that fairer land beyond the seasJ
-
And the crimson light changed to daffodilK
To ashen gray but they stood there stillK
And high o'er the west shone the evening starL
As still he pictured that home afarL
The peace and the bliss our own at lastC
When this dreary parting all is pastC
When my heart's dear love you come to meD
In that fairer land beyond the seaD
-
So he sailed but saddest 'tis alwayM
Not for those who go but for those who stayC
And her sweet eyes gathered a shadow dimN
As days went by with no news of himN
And weeks and months but at last it cameO
As the gray moor shone with the sunset flameO
Her quick eyes glanced the strange lines o'erP
Then she fell like dead on the cottage floorA
-
'Twas a stranded ship on a rocky coastC
One true heart brave when hope was lostC
How he toiled till all the shore had gainedC
And only a baby form remainedC
On ship how he breasted the surging tideC
With Death a wrestling side by sideC
How he lifted the child to its mother's kneeD
As a great wave washed him out to seaD
-
And for days the maid in the cottage doorA
Sat and looked o'er the dreary moorQ
Her cheeks grew white 'neath her blinding tearsR
And the sunset rays seemed cruel spearsS
That pierced her heart and ashen grayC
Turned the earth and sky the night the dayC
But at last a star shone high aboveT
The tender star of the heavenly loveT
-
For as her life ebbed day by dayC
The High Countrie the Fair alwayM
Rose 'fore her eyes the safe sweet homeU
And she seemed to hear Love will you comeV
And so one eve when a bridge of goldC
Seemed spanning the last sea dim and coldC
She went to him for aye to beD
In the fairest land beyond the seaD
