The spare room windows wide were raisedA
And you could look that summer dayB
On pastures green and sunny hillsC
And low rills wandering awayB
Near by the square front yard was sweetD
With rose and carawayB
-
Upon a couch drawn near the lightE
The Deacon's only daughter layB
Bending upon the distant hillsC
Her eyes of dark and thoughtful grayB
The blue veins on her forehead shoneF
'Twas wasted so awayB
-
She moved and from her slender handG
Fell off her mother's wedding ringH
She smiled into her father's faceI
So drops from me each earthly thingH
My hands are free to hold the flowersJ
Of the eternal springH
-
She had ever walked in quiet waysK
Not over beds of flowery easeL
But Sundays in the village choirM
She sweetly sang of ways of peaceN
Of ways of peace and pleasantnessN
She trod such paths as theseN
-
No sweeter voice in all the choirM
Praised God in innocence and truthO
The Deacon in his straight backed pewP
Had dreams of her he lost in youthO
And thought of fair faced Hebrew maidsN
Of Rachel and of RuthO
-
But she had faded day by dayB
Growing more mild and pure and sweetD
As nearer to her ear there cameQ
A distant sea's mysterious beatD
Till now this summer afternoonR
Its waters touched her feetD
-
Upon the painted porch withoutS
Two women stood and whispered lowT
They thought she'd go out with the dayB
They said the Deacon's wife went soT
And then they gently pitied himU
It was a dreadful blowT
-
But she was good she was preparedV
She would be better off than hereW
And then they thought 'twas strange that heX
Her father had not shed a tearY
And then they talked of news and allZ
The promise of the yearA2
-
Her father sat beside the bedB2
Holding her cold hands tenderlyX
And to the everlasting hillsN
He mutely turned his eyes awayB
My God my Shelter and my RockC2
Oh shadow me to dayB
-
He knew not when she crossed the streamD2
And passed into the land unseenE2
So gently did she go from himU
Into its pastures still and greenE2
Into the land of pure delightE
And Jordan rolled betweenE2
-
Then knelt he down beside his deadB2
His white locks lit with sunset's flameQ
My God oh leave me not aloneF
But blessed be Thy holy nameQ
The golden gates were lifted upF2
The King of Glory cameQ
