On the shore I sit and gaze	A
Out on the twilight sea	B
For my ship may come though many days	A
I have waited patiently	B
With waiting trusting eyes	C
A lonely watch I keep	D
For its silver sails to rise	C
Like a blossom out of the deep	D

It is built of a costly wood	E
Bearing the strange perfume	F
Of the gorgeous solitude	G
Where it grew in tropical gloom	F
And the odorous scent the spicy balm	H
Of its isle it will bear to me	B
As I stand on the shore in the magic calm	H
And my ship come in from sea	B
	-
It is laden with all that is sweet	I
Of the beauty of every clime	H
Slowly and proudly 'twill glide to my feet	I
In the eve of that fair Sometime	H
Before me its sails will be furled	I
A princess I shall be	B
Crowned with the wealth of the world	I
When my ship comes in from sea	B
	-
Sweet faces I then shall see	B
Tender undoubting true	J
Soft hands will be stretched to me	B
With a welcome I never knew	J
In the peace of such tenderness	K
I shall rest forevermore	J
And weep in my perfect bliss	L
As I never wept before	J

Sometimes I think it is not far	J
And I bend my head and list	I
For I think I see a slender spar	J
Gleam through the golden mist	I
And I fancy I hear the sound	I
Of wind in a silken sail	M
And an odor rare from Eastern ground	I
Floats in on the languid gale	M

But I sit and watch the west	I
Till the sun goes down in vain	N
It was only a cloud with an ivory crest	I
A cloud of vapor and rain	N
It rises and hides the sea	B
And my heart grows chill and numb	H
Lest this terrible thing should be	B
That my ship will never come	H
	-
But the morn is bright the wave	O
Is a golden and shining track	P
Softly the waters the white sands lave	O
And my trusting faith comes back	P
Oh all that I ever lost	I
And all that I long to be	B
Will be mine when the deep is crossed	I
And my ship comes home from sea	B
