I said that I would see	A
Her once to curse her fair deceitful grace	B
To curse her for my life long agony	A
But when I saw her face	B
I said Sweet Christ forgive both her and me	A

High swelled the chanted hymn	C
Low on the marble swept the velvet pall	D
I bent above and my eyes grew dim	C
My sad heart saw it all	E
She loved me loved me though she wedded him	C

And then shot through my soul	F
A thrill of fierce delight to think that he	A
Must yield her form his all to Death's control	F
The while her love for me	A
Would live when sun and stars had ceased to roll	F

But no on the white brow	G
Graved in its marble was deep calm impressed	H
Saying that peace had come to her through woe	I
Saying she had found rest	H
At last and I I must not love her now	G
	-
It may be in Heaven's grace	B
Beneath the shade of some immortal palm	J
That God will let me see her angel face	B
Then wild wild heart be calm	J
Wipe out that old love every sorrowful trace	B

I know that if it be	A
We two should meet again in Paradise	K
'Twould trouble her pure soul if she should see	A
The old grief in my eyes	L
'Twould grieve her dear heart through eternity	A

Wipe out that grief my soul	F
And shall I lose all love in losing this	M
Unclasp my spirit self's close stolid stole	F
Are there no lives to bless	N
So will I give my love my life no stinted dole	F

God will note deeds and sighs	L
Throned in far splendor on the heavenly hill	O
Though mad sounds from this wretched planet rise	L
Moans wild enough to fill	O
Heaven's air and drown its harps in doleful cries	L

And angels shall look down	P
Through incense rising from my godly deeds	Q
Approving gleam those eyes of tender brown	P
Sure on a brow that bleeds	Q
The thorns should change to a more glorious crown	P

Well done my soul well done	R
Out of thy grief to rear a ladder tall	E
To reach the land that lies beyond the sun	R
To scale the jasper wall	E
And rise to glory on grief's stepping stone	S

God looks into the tide	T
Angel and demon troubled of a man's mind	U
And if my alms are scattered far and wide	T
Only my love to find	U
Only to pave a path to reach her side	T
	-
Will he accept from me	A
My worship gifts the heavens are very still	O
No answer do I hear no sign I see	A
If I but knew His will	O
Would He would come a walking on the sea	A

The storm is overpast for sweet and fair	V
A sudden radiance shone o'er wave and lea	A
And in the glory trembling through the air	V
He came unto me walking on the sea	A
	-
The heavy waves that had rushed to and fro	I
Cowered at His feet in sudden melody	A
And all transfigured in the shining glow	I
Did He come to me walking on the sea	A
	-
Far off I saw His form but knew it not	W
He nearer drew He smiled my fears did flee	A
His loving look dispelled a lingering doubt	X
As He came to me o'er the twilight sea	A
	-
I dropped my burden on the shelving sand	Y
So I might meet Him if such bliss could be	A
I reached the shore I knelt and kissed His hand	Y
With blissful tears beside the twilight sea	A
	-
Such love He woke I would my life have lain	Z
Low down to pave His way He loveth me	A
Who loveth this sad world and blesseth man	A2
Came blown to me across the twilight sea	A

Perplexing questions died within my breast	H
Deep peace hath he who doeth lovingly	A
My will who loveth most he loveth best	H
Came blown to me across the twilight sea	A

Lapped the low waves and lingered on the lea	A
For in the twilight fell a holy calm	J
