I said that I would seeA
Her once to curse her fair deceitful graceB
To curse her for my life long agonyA
But when I saw her faceB
I said Sweet Christ forgive both her and meA
-
High swelled the chanted hymnC
Low on the marble swept the velvet pallD
I bent above and my eyes grew dimC
My sad heart saw it allE
She loved me loved me though she wedded himC
-
And then shot through my soulF
A thrill of fierce delight to think that heA
Must yield her form his all to Death's controlF
The while her love for meA
Would live when sun and stars had ceased to rollF
-
But no on the white browG
Graved in its marble was deep calm impressedH
Saying that peace had come to her through woeI
Saying she had found restH
At last and I I must not love her nowG
-
It may be in Heaven's graceB
Beneath the shade of some immortal palmJ
That God will let me see her angel faceB
Then wild wild heart be calmJ
Wipe out that old love every sorrowful traceB
-
I know that if it beA
We two should meet again in ParadiseK
'Twould trouble her pure soul if she should seeA
The old grief in my eyesL
'Twould grieve her dear heart through eternityA
-
Wipe out that grief my soulF
And shall I lose all love in losing thisM
Unclasp my spirit self's close stolid stoleF
Are there no lives to blessN
So will I give my love my life no stinted doleF
-
God will note deeds and sighsL
Throned in far splendor on the heavenly hillO
Though mad sounds from this wretched planet riseL
Moans wild enough to fillO
Heaven's air and drown its harps in doleful criesL
-
And angels shall look downP
Through incense rising from my godly deedsQ
Approving gleam those eyes of tender brownP
Sure on a brow that bleedsQ
The thorns should change to a more glorious crownP
-
Well done my soul well doneR
Out of thy grief to rear a ladder tallE
To reach the land that lies beyond the sunR
To scale the jasper wallE
And rise to glory on grief's stepping stoneS
-
God looks into the tideT
Angel and demon troubled of a man's mindU
And if my alms are scattered far and wideT
Only my love to findU
Only to pave a path to reach her sideT
-
Will he accept from meA
My worship gifts the heavens are very stillO
No answer do I hear no sign I seeA
If I but knew His willO
Would He would come a walking on the seaA
-
-
-
The storm is overpast for sweet and fairV
A sudden radiance shone o'er wave and leaA
And in the glory trembling through the airV
He came unto me walking on the seaA
-
The heavy waves that had rushed to and froI
Cowered at His feet in sudden melodyA
And all transfigured in the shining glowI
Did He come to me walking on the seaA
-
Far off I saw His form but knew it notW
He nearer drew He smiled my fears did fleeA
His loving look dispelled a lingering doubtX
As He came to me o'er the twilight seaA
-
I dropped my burden on the shelving sandY
So I might meet Him if such bliss could beA
I reached the shore I knelt and kissed His handY
With blissful tears beside the twilight seaA
-
Such love He woke I would my life have lainZ
Low down to pave His way He loveth meA
Who loveth this sad world and blesseth manA2
Came blown to me across the twilight seaA
-
Perplexing questions died within my breastH
Deep peace hath he who doeth lovinglyA
My will who loveth most he loveth bestH
Came blown to me across the twilight seaA
-
The storm was overpast a breath of balmJ
Lapped the low waves and lingered on the leaA
For in the twilight fell a holy calmJ
He came unto me walking on the seaA
-
-
-
Was this a dream If it were not a dreamB2
My life is blest in truth and if it beA
I know across the deep has fallen a gleamB2
A bridge of glory spans the twilight seaA
