I never shall hear your voice againA
Your voice so gentle and lowB
But the thought of you Jenny AllenC
Will go with me where I goB
Your sweet voice drowns the Atlantic waveD
And the rush of the Alpine snowB
-
You were very fair Jenny AllenC
Fair as a woodland roseE
Your heart was pure as an angel's heartF
Too good for earth and its woesE
And I loved you Jenny AllenC
With a sorrowful love God knowsE
-
You loved me Jenny AllenC
My sorrow made me wiseG
And I read your heart 'twas an easy taskH
For within your clear blue eyesG
Your pure and innocent thoughts shone outI
Like stars from the summer skiesG
-
He had riches and fame with his seventy yearsJ
When he won you for his wifeK
You were but a child and poor and tiredL
Tired of toil and strifeK
And you only thought of rest poor doveM
When you sold your beautiful lifeK
-
Alas for the hour I entered inN
Your halls of lordly mirthO
For I lost there Jenny AllenC
All that gives life worthO
You taught your teacher JennyP
The saddest lesson of earthO
-
Ah woe's the hour I ever steppedQ
Your mansion walls withinN
For you loved me Jenny AllenC
But you never dreamed 'twas sinN
Your heart was white as a lily's heartF
When it drinks the sunshine inN
-
God pity me Jenny AllenC
That I ever loved you soB
I would have died to give you peaceR
And I only gave you woeB
For your eyes looked like a wounded dove'sR
When I told you I must goB
-
You were but a child Jenny AllenC
But that hour made you wiseR
A woman's grief and holy strengthS
Sprang up in your mournful eyesR
Ah you were an angel JennyP
An angel in woman's guiseR
-
But a pitiful pitiful look JennyP
Your seraph features woreT
As I left you that dark autumn mornU
Left you forevermoreT
And heaven seemed shut against meP
As I blindly shut that doorT
-
The years have rained on you golden giftsR
You dwell in a queenly showB
There are jewels of price in your silken hairT
And upon your neck of snowB
Do you ever think of me JennyP
And the dream of the long agoB
-
I have sat me down under foreign skiesR
Afire with an Orient glowB
I have seen the moon gild the desert sandV
And silver the Arctic snowB
But the thought of you Jenny AllenC
Goes with me where I goB
