Gayly a knight set forth against the foeA
For a fair face had shone on him in dreamsB
A voice had stirred the silence of his sleepC
Go win the battle and I will be thineD
-
So for the love of those appealing eyesE
Led by low accents of fair Gloria's voiceF
He wound the bugle down his castle's steepC
And gayly rode to battle in the mornG
-
And none were braver in the tented fieldH
Like lightning heralding the doomful boltI
The enemy beheld his snowy plumeJ
And death lights flashed along his glancing spearK
-
But in the lonesome watches of the nightL
An angel came and warned him with clear voiceF
Against high God his rash right arm was raisedM
Was rashly raised against the true the rightL
-
He strove to drown the angel voice with songN
And merry laughter with his princely peersO
But still the angel bade him with clear voiceF
Go join the ranks you rashly have opposedP
-
Oh Angel cried he they are few and weakQ
They may not stand before the press of knightsR
But still the angel bade him with clear voiceF
Go help the weak against the mighty wrongN
-
At last the words sunk deep within his heartS
With god like courage cried he out at lastT
Oh Gloria beautiful I can lose theeU
Lose life and thee to battle for the rightL
-
And when he joined the brave and stalwart ranksV
Like Saul amid his brethren he stoodW
Braver and seemlier than all his peersO
And nobly did he battle for the rightL
-
Gentlest unto the weak and in the frayX
So dauntless none no fear of man had heU
He wrought dismay in Error's blackened ranksV
So nobly did he battle for the rightL
-
But at the last he lay on a lost fieldH
Couched on a broken spear he pallid layX
With dying lips he murmured Gloria's nameY
The field is lost and thou art lost to meU
-
When lo she stood beside him pure and fairZ
With tender eyes that blessed him as he layX
And lo she knelt and clasped his dying handsA2
And murmured I am thine am thine at lastT
-
With wondering eyes he moaned All all is lostB2
And I am dying Ah not so she criedC2
Nothing is lost to him who dare be trueD2
Who gives his life shall find it evermoreE2
-
Methought I saw the spears beat down like grainF2
And the ranks reel before the press of knightsR
The level ground ran gory with our woundsG2
Methought the field was lost and then I fellH2
-
Be calm she cried the right is never lostB2
Though spear and shield and cross may shattered beU
Out of their dust shall spring avenging bladesI2
That yet shall rid us of some giant wrongN
-
And all the blood that falls in righteous causeJ2
Each crimson drop shall nourish snowy flowersK2
And quicken golden grain bright sheaves of goodW
That under happier skies shall yet be reapedL2
-
When right opposes wrong shall evil winM2
Nay never but the year of God is longN
And you are weary rest ye now in peaceN2
For so He giveth His beloved sleepC
-
He smiled and murmured low I am contentO2
With blissful tears that hid the battle's lossP2
So held to her true heart he closed his eyesE
In quietest rest that ever he had knownQ2
