Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFAGDHAIIJKLMFNJ OPQRSTUVKHTWXUTMan looking into the sea | A |
taking the view from those who have as much right to it as | B |
you have to it yourself | C |
it is human nature to stand in the middle of a thing | D |
but you cannot stand in the middle of this | E |
the sea has nothing to give but a well excavated grave | F |
The firs stand in a procession each with an emerald turkey | A |
foot at the top | G |
reserved as their contours saying nothing | D |
repression however is not the most obvious characteristic of | H |
the sea | A |
the sea is a collector quick to return a rapacious look | I |
There are others besides you who have worn that look | I |
whose expression is no longer a protest the fish no longer | J |
investigate them | K |
for their bones have not lasted | L |
men lower nets unconscious of the fact that they are | M |
desecrating a grave | F |
and row quickly away the blades of the oars | N |
moving together like the feet of water spiders as if there were | J |
no such thing as death | O |
The wrinkles progress among themselves in a phalanx | P |
beautiful under networks of foam | Q |
and fade breathlessly while the sea rustles in and out of the | R |
seaweed | S |
the birds swim through the air at top speed emitting cat calls | T |
as heretofore | U |
the tortoise shell scourges about the feet of the cliffs in motion | V |
beneath them | K |
and the ocean under the pulsation of lighthouses and noise of | H |
bell bouys | T |
advances as usual looking as if it were not that ocean in which | W |
dropped things are bound to sink | X |
in which if they turn and twist it is neither with volition nor | U |
consciousness | T |
