Madison Cawein Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI JKJK LMLN OJOJ

The wind makes moan the water runneth chillA
I hear the nymphs go crying through the brakeB
And roaming mournfully from hill to hillA
The maenads all are silent for his sakeB
-
He loved thy pipe O wreathed and piping PanC
So play'st thou sadly lone within thine hollowD
He was thy blood if ever mortal manC
Therefore thou weepest even thou ApolloD
-
But O the grieving of the Little ThingsE
Above the pipe and lyre throughout the woodsF
The beating of a thousand airy wingsE
The cry of all the fragile multitudesG
-
The moth flits desolate the tree toad callsH
Telling the sorrow of the elf and fayI
The cricket little harper of the wallsH
Puts up his harp hath quite forgot to playI
-
And risen on these winter paths anewJ
The wilding blossoms make a tender soundK
The purple weed the morning glory blueJ
And all the timid darlings of the groundK
-
Here here the pain is sharpest For he walkedL
As one of these and they knew naught of fearM
But told him daily happenings and talkedL
Their lovely secrets in his list'ning earN
-
Yet we do bid them grieve and tell their griefO
Else were they thankless else were all untrueJ
O wind and stream O bee and bird and leafO
Mourn for your poet with a long adieuJ
