-
Ah the happy Christmas timesB
Times we all rememberC
Times that flung a ruddy glowD
O'er the gray DecemberC
Will they never come againE
With their song and storyF
Never wear a remnant moreG
Of their olden gloryF
Must the little children missH
Still the festal tokenI
Must their realm of young romanceJ
All be marred and brokenI
Must the mother promise onK
While her smiles dissembleL
And she speaks right quietlyF
Lest her voice should trembleL
-
Darlings wait till father comesM
Wait and we'll discoverC
Never were such Christmas timesB
When the war is overC

-
Underneath the midnight skyA
Bright with starry beautyF
Sad the shivering sentinelL
Treads his round of dutyF
For his thoughts are far awayN
Far from strife and battleL
As he listens dreaminglyL
To his baby's prattleL
As he clasps his sobbing wifeO
Wild with sudden gladnessB
Kisses all her tears awayN
Chides her looks of sadnessB
Talks of Christmas nights to comeP
And his step grows lighterC
Whispering while his stiffening handQ
Grasps his musket tighterC
-
Patience love keep heart keep hopeR
To your weary roverC
What a home our home will beF
When the war is overC

-
By the twilight Christmas fireC
All her senses ladenI
With a weight of tendernessB
Sits the musing maidenI
From the parlor's cheerful blazeB
Far her visions wanderC
To the white tent gleaming brightS
On the hill side yonderC
Buoyant in her brave young loveT
Flushed with patriot honourC
No misgiving no fond fearC
Flings its shade upon herC
Though no mortal soul can knowD
Half the love she bears himU
Proudly for her country's sakeV
From her heart she spares himU
-
God be thanked she does not dreamW
That her gallant loverC
Will be in a soldier's graveX
When the war is overC

-
'Midst the turmoil and the strifeX
Of the war tide's rushingY
Every heart its separate woeD
In its depths is hushingY
Who has time for tears when bloodZ
All the land is steepingY
In our poverty we grudgeA2
Even the waste of weepingY
But when quiet comes againE
And the bands long brokenI
Gather round the hearth and breatheB2
Names now seldom spokenI
Then we'll miss the precious linksB
Mourn the empty placesB
Read the hopeless NevermoreC
In each other's facesB
-
Oh what aching anguish'd heartsB
O'er lone graves will hoverC
With a new fresh sense of painC2
When the war is overC
-
-
VX
-
Stern endurance bitterer stillL
Sharp with self denialL
Fraught with loftier sacrificeB
Fuller far of trialL
Strews our flinty path of thornsB
Marks our bloody storyX
Fits us for the victor's palmD2
Weaves our robe of gloryX
Shall we faint with God aboveX
And His strong arm underC
And the cold world gazing onK
In a maze of wonderC
No with more resistless marchE2
More resolved endeavorC
Press we onward struggle stillL
Fight and win foreverC
-
Holy peace will heal all illsB
Joy all losses coverC
Raptures rend our Southern skiesB
When the war is overC
