APRIL THA
-
-
I-
-
Unconquered captive close thine eye-
And draw the ashen sackcloth o'erB
And in thy speechless woe deploreC
The fate that would not let thee die-
-
-
II-
-
The arm that wore the shield strip bareD
The hand that held the martial reinE
And hurled the spear on many a plainE
Stretch till they clasp the shackles thereD
-
-
III-
-
The foot that once could crush the crownF
Must drag the fetters till it bleedG
Beneath their weight thou dost not needG
It now to tread the tyrant downF
-
-
IVH
-
Thou thought'st him vanquish'd boastful trustI
His lance in twain his sword a wreckJ
But with his heel upon thy neckJ
He holds thee prostrate in the dustI
-
-
VH
-
Bend though thou must beneath his willK
Let not one abject moan have placeL
But with majestic silent graceL
Maintain thy regal bearing stillK
-
-
VIH
-
Look back through all thy storied pastM
And sit erect in conscious prideN
No grander heroes ever diedN
No sterner battled to the lastM
-
-
VIIH
-
Weep if thou wilt with proud sad meinO
Thy blasted hopes thy peace undoneP
Yet brave live on nor seek to shunP
Thy fate like Egypt's conquer'd QueenO
-
-
VIIIH
-
Though forced a captive's place to fillK
In the triumphal train yet thereD
Superbly like Zenobia wearD
Thy chains Virginia Victrix stillK
