Virginia. A Sonnet Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAACCADDEFFE

Grandly thou fillest the world's eye to dayA
My proud Virginia When the gage was thrownB
The deadly gage of battle thou aloneB
Strong in thy self control didst stoop to layA
The olive branch thereon and calmly prayA
We might have peace the rather When the foeC
Turned scornfully upon thee bade thee goC
And whistled up his war hounds then the wayA
Of duty full before thee thou didst springD
Into the centre of the martial ringD
Thy brave blood boiling and thy glorious eyeE
Shot with heroic fire and swear to claimF
Sublimest victory in God's own nameF
Or wrapped in robes of martyrdom to dieE
