The Rest Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFFGHIIJIKLMGIII| The rest of us watch from beyond the fence | A |
| as the woman moves with her jagged stride | B |
| into her pain as if into a slow race | C |
| We see her body in motion | D |
| but hear no sounds or we hear | E |
| sounds but no language or we know | F |
| it is not a language we know | F |
| yet We can see her clearly | G |
| but for her it is running in black smoke | H |
| The cluster of cells in her swelling | I |
| like porridge boiling and bursting | I |
| like grapes we think Or we think of | J |
| explosions in mud but we know nothing | I |
| All around us the trees | K |
| and the grasses light up with forgiveness | L |
| so green and at this time | M |
| of the year healthy | G |
| We would like to call something | I |
| out to her Some form of cheering | I |
| There is pain but no arrival at anything | I |
