The Rest Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFFGHIIJIKLMGIIIThe rest of us watch from beyond the fence | A |
as the woman moves with her jagged stride | B |
into her pain as if into a slow race | C |
We see her body in motion | D |
but hear no sounds or we hear | E |
sounds but no language or we know | F |
it is not a language we know | F |
yet We can see her clearly | G |
but for her it is running in black smoke | H |
The cluster of cells in her swelling | I |
like porridge boiling and bursting | I |
like grapes we think Or we think of | J |
explosions in mud but we know nothing | I |
All around us the trees | K |
and the grasses light up with forgiveness | L |
so green and at this time | M |
of the year healthy | G |
We would like to call something | I |
out to her Some form of cheering | I |
There is pain but no arrival at anything | I |
