In the burned house I am eating breakfastA
You understand there is no house there is no breakfastA
yet here I amB
-
The spoon which was melted scrapes againstC
the bowl which was melted alsoD
No one else is aroundE
-
Where have they gone to brother and sisterF
mother and father Off along the shoreG
perhaps Their clothes are still on the hangersH
-
their dishes piled beside the sinkI
which is beside the woodstoveJ
with its grate and sooty kettleK
-
every detail clearL
tin cup and rippled mirrorF
The day is bright and songlessH
-
the lake is blue the forest watchfulK
In the east a bank of cloudM
rises up silently like dark breadN
-
I can see the swirls in the oilclothO
I can see the flaws in the glassH
those flares where the sun hits themP
-
I can't see my own arms and legsH
or know if this is a trap or blessingQ
finding myself back here where everythingQ
-
in this house has long been overF
kettle and mirror spoon and bowlR
including my own bodyS
-
including the body I had thenT
including the body I have nowU
as I sit at this morning table alone and happyS
-
bare child's feet on the scorched floorboardsH
I can almost seeS
in my burning clothes the thin green shortsH
-
and grubby yellow T shirtV
holding my cindery non existentW
radiant flesh IncandescentW
