In the burned house I am eating breakfastA
You understand there is no house there is no breakfastA
yet here I amB

The spoon which was melted scrapes againstC
the bowl which was melted alsoD
No one else is aroundE

Where have they gone to brother and sisterF
mother and father Off along the shoreG
perhaps Their clothes are still on the hangersH

their dishes piled beside the sinkI
which is beside the woodstoveJ
with its grate and sooty kettleK

every detail clearL
tin cup and rippled mirrorF
The day is bright and songlessH

the lake is blue the forest watchfulK
In the east a bank of cloudM
rises up silently like dark breadN

I can see the swirls in the oilclothO
I can see the flaws in the glassH
those flares where the sun hits themP

I can't see my own arms and legsH
or know if this is a trap or blessingQ
finding myself back here where everythingQ

in this house has long been overF
kettle and mirror spoon and bowlR
including my own bodyS

including the body I had thenT
including the body I have nowU
as I sit at this morning table alone and happyS

bare child's feet on the scorched floorboardsH
I can almost seeS
in my burning clothes the thin green shortsH

and grubby yellow T shirtV
holding my cindery non existentW
