Now lonely is the woodA
No flower now lingers noneB
The virgin sisterhoodA
Of roses all are goneC
Now Autumn sheds her latest leafD
And in my heart is griefD
-
Ah me for all earth rearsE
The appointed bound is placedF
After a thousand yearsE
The great oak falls at lastG
And thou more lovely canst not stayH
Sweet rose beyond thy dayH
-
Our life is not the lifeI
Of roses and of leavesJ
Else wherefore this deep strifeI
This pain our soul conceivesJ
The fall of ev'n such short lived thingsJ
To us some sorrow bringsJ
-
And yet plant bird and flyK
Feel no such hidden fireL
Happy they live and dieK
Happy with no desireL
They in their brief life have fulfill'dM
All Nature in them will'dM
-
And were we also madeN
Of like terrestrial mouldO
We should not be afraidN
Nor feel the grave so coldO
But all oblivious of our fateP
Live sweetly out our dateP
-
For the great mother lovesJ
Her children far too wellQ
These longings that she movesJ
Their own fulfilment tellQ
She would not burden us with aughtP
We really needed notP
-
O not in vain she gaveR
To the wild birds their wingsJ
They spread them forth and haveS
Heaven for their wanderingsJ
But we to whom no wings are givenB
Why seek we for a HeavenB
-
And when far o'er us flyK
Those voyagers of the airT
Why must we gaze and sighK
O would that I were thereT
Why are we restless ill contentP
Tied to one elementP
-
'Tis not that in our tearsJ
Some happier life we craveR
Our happiest sweetest yearsJ
Mysterious moments haveS
The sense of our brief human lotP
Clings to us haunts our thoughtP
-
O then this pleasant earthU
Seems but an alien thingV
Faint grows her busy mirthU
Far hence our thoughts take wingV
For some enduring home we cryK
She cannot satisfyK
-
Or bind us only tiesJ
Immortal found can blessJ
Only in loving eyesJ
We see our happinessJ
Only upon a loving breastP
Our souls find any restP
-
Why thirsts the spirit soJ
For life what moves it thusJ
'Tis her voice yes I knowJ
'Tis Nature cries in usJ
'Tis no unholy strife of oursJ
Against forbidding powersJ
-
What though we gaze with fearW
So blank death seems to beX
What though no land appearW
Beyond that lonely seaX
Still in our hearts her cry doth stayP
She will find out a wayP
-
So in the chrysalisJ
Slumber those lovely wingsJ
So from the shell it isJ
The dazzling pearl she bringsJ
Her glorious works she works aloneY
Unfathom'd and unknownY
