Thou who hast follow'd far with eyes of loveA
The shy and virgin sights of Spring to dayB
Sad soul what dost thou in this happy groveC
Hast thou no pipe to touch no strain to playB
Where Nature smiles so fair and seems to ask a layB
-
Ah she needs none she is too beautifulD
How should I sing her for my heart would tireE
Seeking a lovelier verse each time to cullD
In striving still to pitch my music higherE
Lovelier than any muse is she who gives the fireE
-
No impulse I beseech my strains are vileF
To escape thee Nature restless here I roveC
Look not so sweet on me avert thy smileF
O cease at length this fever'd breast to moveG
I have loved thee in vain I cannot speak my loveA
-
Here sense with apathy seems gently wedH
The gloom is starr'd with flowers the unseen treesI
Spread thick and softly real above my headH
And the far birds add music to the peaceJ
In this dark place of sleep where whispers never ceaseJ
-
Hush then my pipe vain is thy passion hereK
Vain is the burning bosom of desireE
Forever hush'd let me this silence hearK
As a sad Muse in the melodious choirE
Hushes her voice to catch the happier voices by herE
-
Deep shaded will I lie and deeper yetL
In night where not a leaf its neighbour knowsM
Forget the shining of the stars forgetL
The vernal visitation of the roseM
And far from all delights prepare my heart's reposeM
-
Strive how I may I cannot slumber soN
Still burns that sleepless beauty on the mindO
Still insupportable those visions glowN
And hark my spirit's aspirations findO
An answer in the leaves a warning on the windO
-
'O crave not silence thou too soon too sureP
Shall Autumn come and through these branches weepQ
Soon birds shall cease and flowers no more endureP
And thou beneath the mould unwilling creepQ
And silent soon shalt be in that eternal sleepQ
-
'Green still it is where that fair goddess straysR
Then follow till around thee all be sereS
Lose not a vision of her passing faceT
Nor miss the sound of her soft robes that hereK
Sweep over the wet leaves of the fast falling year '-
